Pongal Festival 2014 is one of the most important Hindu festivals celebrated by Tamil people across the globe. Also known as Thai pongal, the festival is celebrated on the Tamil month of Thai. This year, Thai Pongal date is 14 January 2014. The festival is mainly dedicated to Lord Suyra.
Thai Pongal is a harvest festival and is celebrated for four days. The celebration starts on the last day of the Margazhi month. The first day is observed as Bhogi Pongal. The second day is the important day and is known as Thai Pongal or Perum Pongal. The 3rd day is the Mattu Pongal and Jallikkattu or cattle play is held on this day. The final day is observed as Kaanum Pongal, which is a time for family reunions.

In Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, the day is celebrated as Lohri Festival.
In Assam, the festival is observed as Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu.
In Rajasthan and Gujarat the festival is celebrated as Uttarayana.
While in Nepal the day is celebrated as Maghe Sankranti.
