Attukal Pongala Festival


The date of 2014 Attukal Pongala Festival is on 16th February 2014, Sunday. The festival ccelebrated at Attukal Devi Temple in Trivandrum annually for 10 days during February – March is one of the most popular temple festivals in India. Attukal Pongala starts on 8th February 2014 and concludes on 17th February 2014.The major event offering Pongala nivedyam (sacrificial offering) by women is on 16th February.

The festival is celebrated on the Malayalam month of Kumbham. The pongala offering to Goddess Parvati is performed by women on the 9th day of the festival. Due to the huge amount of women devotees, Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is known as the Sabarimala of Women. Pongala Payasam is a sweet offering of boiled rice with jaggery, coconut gratings, and raisins, prepared in earthern pot to the Goddess.

The Lighting of the Pongala Hearths is at 10.30 AM and the sanctification of Pongala is at 02.30 PM when the temple priests starts sprinkling of holy water (theertham) on the Pongala payasam.

World Famous Festival Guinness Record

Attukal Bhagavaty Temple Pongala festival entered Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest annual gathering of women. The pongal festival on 2009 was attended by 2.5 million women.
